Local residents voicing opposition to ex-police officers establishing a cannabis dispensary: "It won't occur here"

In the heart of Chicago's West Ridge neighbourhood, a group of local investors and entrepreneurs, including several former Chicago police officers, have leased an empty restaurant on the corner of Western and Peterson avenues with the dream of opening a marijuana dispensary. The Kaneh Group, spearheaded by Michael Ward, a retired Chicago police officer, has been working tirelessly for six years to obtain a state license to sell marijuana.

Initially, the group found support from 40th Ward Alderman Andre Vasquez in their quest for a location. However, recent developments have seen a change of heart from the Alderman. The Kaneh Group's proposed dispensary, located within the 40th Ward, is now facing opposition due to the ownership of the dispensary by retired police officers.

Alderman Vasquez has expressed concerns about the perceived injustice of officers who previously arrested people for selling marijuana now owning a dispensary. This sentiment is shared by some residents, who have voiced their concerns about the potential impact on those currently incarcerated for similar offenses.

The Kaneh Group, however, is confident and determined. They have proposed a community component where profits would be put back into the community, with five percent of the profits going into a trust jointly run by the Kaneh Group and community members.

The group's personal experiences with the injustices of past drug laws are not lost on them. Ward himself has personally experienced the harsh realities, with his son arrested for marijuana possession. This emotional connection to the issue has driven the group to prioritise community engagement and support.

The Kaneh Group is now faced with a difficult decision. They have threatened to withdraw their application for the 40th Ward location unless Alderman Vasquez changes his mind. If not, the group intends to relocate their operations elsewhere, even if it means leaving the city.

The saga continues as the Kaneh Group, along with Alderman Vasquez, navigates the complexities of community acceptance, personal convictions, and the pursuit of a dream in Chicago's bustling cannabis industry.
