Lower Manhattan marks 9/11 commemoration ceremony: Insights into this year's event
On Thursday, September 11, 2025, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in Lower Manhattan will host a memorial service to remember the nearly 3,000 people who were tragically lost in the 2001 attacks.
The service will bring together loved ones to honour the victims, including hundreds of first responders. The names of all 2,983 victims, including those from the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, will be read aloud during the ceremony. This poignant tradition will continue until about 1 p.m., pausing at five specific moments marking the tragic timeline of events: the strikes on the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and the crashes of United Airlines Flights 175, 77, and 93, and the collapses of the south and north towers.
The ceremony will start at 8:30 a.m. and will be followed by a citywide moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., marking the time when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the north tower of the World Trade Center in 2001. Houses of worship across the city are expected to toll their bells at this hour.
In addition to the memorial service, the "Tribute in Light" light spectacle will commemorate the fallen Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Organised by the Municipal Arts Society of New York, this annual event will present twin beams of light in the Manhattan skyline. This year, the Tribute in Light will be visible at sunset on September 11, which will be at 7:11 p.m. that night.
The Tribute in Light will remain illuminated throughout the night until fading away at dawn on September 12. To extend the spectacle, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum is partnering with the New York City Tourism + Conventions to include rooftops and facades across the city. Participants in the extended Tribute in Light include One World Trade Center, the Empire State Building, The Oculus, the Bank of America Tower, the JFK Air Traffic Control Tower, and bridges around the region.
Families of 9/11 victims can access the Memorial Plaza as early as 7:30 a.m. and the museum as early as 8 a.m., with the last permitted entry at 7 p.m. Admission to the museum is free for family members, and reservations are advised. The Memorial Plaza will remain open until midnight, allowing visitors to view the Tribute in Light.
For those who wish to attend the memorial service, tickets for the 9/11 Memorial and Museum can be reserved online at visit.911memorial.org. Information about 9/11 commemorations can be found at 911memorial.org.
As we remember the events of September 11, 2001, let us honour the lives lost and the resilience shown by the city of New York. The Tribute in Light serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of the city and the importance of coming together to remember and heal.
