Lunar eclipse set to occur in its entirety
On Sunday evening, a rare astronomical event will light up the skies over Germany. A total lunar eclipse, often referred to as a blood moon due to the reddish hue it takes on, is set to occur.
This spectacle will coincide with the full moon, making it a full moon total lunar eclipse. The peak of the event will occur at 9:49 PM, while the full moon will emerge from the Earth's shadow at 9:57 PM.
The total lunar eclipse is not limited to Germany's borders. It will be observable from different parts of the world, offering a shared celestial experience for many.
In Germany, the eclipse will be visible from around 7:30 PM to 8:53 PM. The moonrise times vary across different cities: Berlin at 7:37 PM, Munich at 7:40 PM, and Hamburg at 7:52 PM. As the moon rises above the horizon, it will present a captivating sight to behold.
This total lunar eclipse is part of a series of four consecutive total lunar eclipses, known as a tetrad. It marks the end of the eclipse season, with the next event being a solar eclipse.
The eclipse will last for approximately one hour and twenty-three minutes, during which the full moon will turn a reddish colour. This phenomenon occurs due to the refraction of sunlight through the Earth's atmosphere, giving the moon its blood moon appearance.
Dr. Carolin Liefke, an astronomer specialised in lunar eclipses, is currently researching at the House of Astronomy in Heidelberg. She will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on this rare event.
This total lunar eclipse is a rare occurrence, happening approximately every 2-3 years. It is an opportunity for stargazers and casual observers alike to witness a stunning display in the night sky.
So, make sure to step outside and witness this celestial spectacle. The total lunar eclipse promises to be a memorable event, marking the end of the eclipse season in style.
