In the heart of the Alps, nestled between Austria and Switzerland, the tiny principality of Liechtenstein played host to a royal wedding on August 30, 2025. Princess Marie Caroline of Liechtenstein, often referred to as "Europe's richest princess" by tabloids, exchanged vows with Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer, a Venezuelan-born investment manager.

The wedding ceremony took place in the Cathedral of St. Florin, Vaduz, Liechtenstein's capital city. The Cathedral, a stunning example of Baroque architecture, was adorned with flowers and candles, creating a magical atmosphere for the special occasion.

Princess Marie Caroline wore a long white dress with intricate embroidery and puff sleeves, a fitting choice for the occasion. Her groom, Leopoldo, looked dashing in a traditional black tuxedo.

Lisbeth Bischof, a nobility expert, noted that it is unusual for a princess to marry a commoner. However, the union between Princess Marie Caroline and Leopoldo was celebrated by the people of Liechtenstein and the royal family alike.

Liechtenstein, half the size of Bremen with 160 square kilometers, is home to approximately 40,000 inhabitants. Despite its small size, the principality is wealthy due to its bank, real estate, and forest ownership. The current head of state of Liechtenstein is Prince Hans-Adam II.

Following the wedding ceremony, the celebration continued in the castle of the princely family. The castle, perched atop a hill overlooking the town, provided a picturesque backdrop for the festivities.

The princely house of Liechtenstein has been a constitutional hereditary monarchy since 1862, making it one of the oldest monarchies in the world. The wedding of Princess Marie Caroline and Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer marks a new chapter in the history of this small but mighty nation.
