In September 2023, Apple launched macOS Sequoia 15.0, bringing a host of new features to its operating system. One of the most intriguing additions is the iPhone mirroring feature, which allows for seamless integration between iOS devices and Macs.

The iPhone mirroring feature enables users to mirror their iPhone screen on their Mac, allowing them to access services they don't have signed in on their Mac but do on their iPhone, such as Messenger and bank accounts. It also allows audio from the iPhone to be played through the Mac, making it a useful alternative to pairing an iPhone with a Homepod or other speaker when not at home.

However, it's important to note that the iPhone mirroring feature does have some limitations. For instance, it requires both devices to be connected to the same WiFi, and it does not support all common gestures, such as swiping down from the top right to access the Control Center layout in iOS 18. Additionally, it does not provide access to the phone's camera or voice recording, and it does not currently support drag and drop of files between Mac and iPhone.

The iPhone mirroring feature also includes the Windows 11 Snap-like Tiling feature, which allows users to control the iPhone on Mac with tiling windows to arrange the workspace efficiently. This combination is particularly beneficial when playing games, as it allows users to play games that aren't available on Mac, though at a minuscule screen size and lack of two-thumb controls.

Netflix version of games can now be accessed through iPhone mirroring, though at a small screen size. Point-and-click adventures like Oxenfree still work reasonably well with iPhone mirroring.

Another notable addition to macOS Sequoia is the new feature called AI, or "Apple Intelligence". This AI-driven system aims to help users manage their devices more efficiently. However, the AI features in macOS Sequoia are currently not fully developed, and the AI-generated images are not expected to significantly impact the user's experience.

To use the iPhone mirroring feature, users need to download the macOS Sequoia public beta, search for iPhone Mirroring in Launchpad, and sign in with the same Apple Account.

In conclusion, the iPhone mirroring feature in macOS Sequoia offers a convenient way to extend the functionality of an iPhone to a Mac, while the AI-driven system aims to streamline the user experience. Despite its limitations, the iPhone mirroring feature is a promising development that could pave the way for more integrated experiences between iOS and macOS devices in the future.
