Macron Greets Selenskyy Prior to Coalition of the Eager Meeting - Macron greets Zelensky prior to the assembly of the Group of Committed Nations
In a significant gathering, world leaders will convene in Paris on Thursday morning at the Élysée, the official residence of the French President. The meeting, which will be held in a hybrid format, is set to bring together the Coalition of the Willing, a group consisting of around 30 predominantly European states.
Besides French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who will jointly chair the meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Joe Biden will also participate. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) will attend the meeting via video link.
The focus of the meeting will be on discussing security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. The proposed security guarantees, according to the French interpretation, consist of three components: further support for the Ukrainian army, Western ground troops, and a guarantee by the USA.
It is agreed that each member of the Coalition of the Willing should contribute "according to their capabilities." However, it is unclear whether this means that the Bundeswehr (German military) may not participate in the ground troops discussed by Macron and Starmer, as Friedrich Merz has expressed significant reservations about such deployment.
The meeting is intended to send a strong message to encourage the USA to increase pressure on Russia to achieve a ceasefire. It's worth noting that the deadline for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy, proposed by former US President Donald Trump, has expired on Monday.
Regarding the outcome of the meeting, it has been clarified that there will be no concrete contributions to the security guarantees for Ukraine on Thursday. Whether a press conference will be held at the end of the meeting is currently unclear.
This gathering in Paris comes at a critical juncture in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the world watches with bated breath as leaders seek to find a peaceful solution.
