Major building project initiates in Braunschweig, prompting an initial atmosphere of dissatisfaction

In the heart of Brunswick, a construction site at Hagenmarkt has been causing frustration among residents and shop owners since Monday, 11 August. The city's goal was to create a new, attractive jewel for the city center, but so far, the construction has caused more frustration and annoyance than anticipation.

The ongoing construction has left some business owners fearing noticeable losses in turnover due to the disruptions. Matthias Katschmareck, owner of the Sewing Center with repair service, finds it difficult to guide customers to his store due to multiple construction sites. Some residents are experiencing difficulties receiving customers and patients due to the construction as well.

The current traffic rules for Casparistraße in Braunschweig during the construction phase include temporary road closures, detours, reduced speed limits, no parking zones, and specific details can be found through local traffic announcements or the city's official website. However, the mood remains tense among Brunswick residents, who perceive the situation in the city center as chaotic.

One particular traffic sign at Hagenmarkt, depicting a bicycle with arrows leading to different routes, is causing confusion among cyclists. The city has recognized the problems and announced improvements for the traffic signs at Hagenmarkt. The improvements include making the arrows on traffic signs more distinguishable in color. Additional ramps will also be installed to facilitate the transition in Casparistraße for people using rollators and wheelchairs.

Bernd Schroers, spokesman for the Interest and Advertising Community Casparistraße, identifies poor signage, lack of ramps for mobility-impaired people, and complicated conditions for delivery vehicles as major shortcomings in the planning. An alternative is being worked on for the traffic signs at Hagenmarkt.

The city asks for understanding, acknowledging that there will be noticeable and disruptive disruptions during the construction phase. Despite the announcements, the current situation is difficult for pedestrians, who have to navigate a labyrinth and dash between cars at one crossing in a stretch of around 500 meters. Three pedestrian crossings will be set up soon to provide relief for pedestrians.

According to Mayor Dr. Thorsten Kornblum, the planned attraction for Brunswick is expected to be a significant addition to the city center. More details about the problems residents are facing and who is currently allowed to drive through Casparistraße can be found in the "Braunschweigische Zeitung". The city remains committed to improving the situation and ensuring a smooth transition once the construction is complete.
