Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency Seizes Suspect Platform Near Pulau Bidong
In a significant move, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized a platform and a towing vessel on Wednesday afternoon, approximately 16 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Terengganu, near Pulau Bidong. The announcement was made to local media by Terengganu Maritime Director, Maritime Captain Hamiludin Che Awang.
The seized platform, which was being towed by a passenger boat, was found to lack essential safety equipment, potentially endangering the crew, passengers, and other water users. The platform, equipped with a second level resembling part of a house and fitted with glass windows and furniture, contained a luxury vehicle.
A video of the seized platform was released by New Straits Times, showing the platform's unique structure and the absence of safety equipment. The owner of the platform, confiscated by the MMEA, has been identified as Petrofac.
The towing activity was accompanied by a boat operating without a valid license from the Department of Marine, further adding to the illegality of the operation. The MMEA has launched an investigation into the matter, and further details are expected to be released in due course.
This seizure serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to maritime safety regulations. The MMEA urges all water users to prioritise safety and operate within the law to ensure a safe and secure maritime environment for all.
