In a courtroom in Teesside, a trial is underway for Ciara Watkin, a transgender woman from Thornaby, who is accused of three counts of sexual assault.
According to Prosecutor Paul Reid, Watkin concealed her transgender status during her relationship with the man, leading to a revelation after they had already engaged in sexual activity. The man, who did not consent to sexual activity with a transgender individual, told the police that if he had known about Watkin's gender, he would not have consented.
The alleged victim and Watkin first communicated on Snapchat, where Watkin used a female cartoon avatar and there was no discussion about sexuality or gender. On the night they spent together, Watkin refused to let the man touch her, claiming she was on her period. However, sexual activity did take place, as admitted by Watkin.
It was only after the sexual activity that Watkin revealed her transgender status to the man. The man then asked if Watkin had male genitalia, to which Watkin did not answer. The court heard that there was no discussion about Watkin's gender during their relationship.
Later, Watkin admitted to her alleged victim that she had a "massive secret". She also admitted to the police that she had sex with the man without telling him she was transgender when she was arrested.
In the trial, Watkin has denied all counts of sexual assault. The jury has been informed that Watkin performed sex acts on the man, but the outcome of the trial remains to be seen.
