"Manchester United's significant transfer challenge this summer, according to Brian McClair, stems from the lack of European football and the reduced funds that come with it, making them less appealing compared to other clubs."

"Manchester United's significant transfer issue this summer revolves around reduced finances due to absent European football, according to Brian McClair. This predicament could potentially impact Man Utd's appeal compared to other football clubs."

In the first summer transfer window under Ruben Amorim's management at Manchester United, former forward Brian McClair offers insightful advice on how the club can navigate their current struggles.

McClair, a man familiar with success at Old Trafford having won eight major honours with the Red Devils, believes the key for United lies in bringing in players who can perform at the required level. He emphasises the need for experienced players who won't need time to settle, especially in light of the club's absence from European football, which means less money to spend and less appeal for top-tier players.

The Red Devils finished the 2024/25 Premier League season in a disappointing 15th place, their worst finish during the Premier League era. McClair attributes some of this poor performance to expensive transfer misfires. He also points out that not every player at the club is suited to Amorim's preferred back three system.

Amorim, who has a clear vision of how he likes to set up his teams and win games, has signed five players for the 2025/26 season: Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Diego Leon, Benjamin Šeško, and Senne Lammens. While McClair does not express any opinions about these acquisitions, he does suggest that United, in their current situation, need big-game players who aren't afraid to grab the limelight and alleviate some pressure.

Last season, Bruno Fernandes was the only player who regularly alleviated pressure for United. However, McClair also highlights the need for players who can score goals, such as Rasmus Hojlund, who struggled last season while being tasked with scoring for a side that struggled to create chances.

In summary, McClair's advice to Amorim is to prioritise experienced players who can perform under pressure, are capable of scoring goals, and fit into the back three system. As United prepare for the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, they have focused their transfer efforts on acquiring attacking players, such as Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, for a combined fee exceeding £200million. This strategy, if successful, could see United bounce back from their disappointing 2024/25 season.
