Manchester's motorway to undergo elevation aimed at renovating a 50-year-old bridge.
The M60 bridge, a vital artery for approximately 80,000 daily drivers, is undergoing significant repairs. The structure, which is 50 years old and carries the M60, is being repaired near Didsbury, with the first phase focusing on a 200-meter-long section over the River Mersey and Palatine Road.
Highways England, the organisation responsible for the project, has appointed Balfour Beatty to develop and build a temporary structure for the repair work. This temporary structure will support the motorway during the repairs, ensuring the safety of drivers and workers alike.
Balfour Beatty's director, Richard Bailey, expressed his delight about the opportunity to carry out this critical project, emphasising the importance of maintaining the bridge's safety for decades to come.
During the repairs, around 800 tonnes of motorway will be lifted above each column using 44 hydraulic jacks. The motorway will be raised by five millimetres for the repairs to take place, with the first lift happening last week under the anticlockwise carriageway. On Thursday 12 March, the motorway will be lifted above another column overnight.
To accommodate the repairs, a diversion will be in place for drivers. They will be directed along the A5103 Princess Parkway, A560, and M56 during the closure of the anticlockwise carriageway between junction 5 (Didsbury) and junction 3 (Cheadle) from 10pm until 6am on the same day.
The repairs are part of a larger project, with work on the Palatine Road bridge being carried out in phases. Bridge specialist Mabey Hire has been awarded a contract to design and install the temporary structure for the bridge repairs, with Gordon MacDonald, the chief executive of Mabey Hire, expressing his pleasure about the company's involvement in the project.
The repairs are expected to be completed by 2023, ensuring the M60 bridge continues to serve as a reliable connection for drivers in the Manchester area.
