President Suspends Operation of Elevador da Glória and Cancels Book Fair Following Tragic Accident
In the wake of a devastating accident that claimed 16 lives and left several injured, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has taken immediate action to ensure the safety of the public.
The incident occurred in the Bairro Alto, involving the Elevador da Glória, a popular tourist attraction that connects Restauradores to Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara. The funicular, managed by the municipal company Carris, is currently not operating as Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa suspended its operation for inspection.
The President, along with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and President of the Lisbon Municipal Chamber Carlos Moedas, laid flowers near the site of the accident after attending a mass in memory of the victims. The mass was also attended by Ministers of National Defense, Nuno Melo, and Health, Ana Paula Martins, among others.
Speaking to journalists at the exit of the Church of São Domingos, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims. He emphasized the importance of affirming the existence and continuation of life, security, and peace in the aftermath of the accident.
The President has also cancelled the Book Fair that was to take place in the Belém Palace between Thursday and Sunday, due to the accident with the Elevador da Glória. The event has been rescheduled for a later date and will take place in an enclosed space.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has been in constant contact with the Prime Minister and the President of the Municipal Chamber regarding the care of the injured since yesterday. He argued that it is important to clarify the causes of the accident as quickly as possible.
The responsibility for investigating the technical causes of the accident has been taken over by the Portuguese investigative authority GPIAAF (Gabinete de Prevenção e Investigação de Acidentes com Aeronaves e de Acidentes Ferroviários). A detailed interim report is expected within 45 days, and a final report in one year.
The Head of State thanked all the operatives, firefighters, Civil Protection, Security, military, health professionals, and volunteers involved in the accident response. He also mentioned that responsibility means clarifying the causes of the accident.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated that this is a time of mourning, caring for the injured, and addressing representatives of the states with citizen victims of the accident. He expressed that Lisboa and Portugal are lands of life, peace, and security.
The President has also suspended the operation of other funiculars for inspection to ensure they meet operating conditions. The authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of the public and to provide support to the families affected by the tragedy.
