In 2024, Perplexity's annual recurring revenue skyrocketed from $3-4 million to a staggering $70 million by year-end. This growth can be attributed to the successful launch of its advertising offerings, which were first tested by notable companies such as Fandom, Chip, L'Oréal, and Blizzard Entertainment.

The advertising capabilities of Perplexity are continually expanding, with the company exploring new monetization models. Taz Patel, the head of advertising and shopping at Perplexity, played a pivotal role in this development. He joined the company in December 2024 and was instrumental in the growth of Perplexity's emerging advertising business.

Perplexity's advertising strategy includes sponsored questions and side media placements. This strategy not only generates revenue for the company but also allows it to share a portion of the earnings with its publisher partners. This approach addresses the limitations of subscription-only revenue models.

In October 2024, Perplexity introduced Spaces, an AI-powered collaboration hub. This expansion was followed by the launch of an AI-powered shopping hub in November 2024, backed by Amazon and Nvidia.

The platform's primary monetization strategy beyond subscriptions is advertising revenue. Perplexity operates on a CPM model with rates exceeding $50 for its advertising platform. The company processes 100 million search queries per week and has been downloaded more than 2 million times, processing over 230 million queries monthly.

Perplexity's user demographics are characterised by high education levels and professional status. 80% of Perplexity users hold undergraduate degrees, 30% are in senior leadership positions, and 65% work in high-income white-collar professions.

The platform has forged partnerships with major media outlets like Fortune, Time, The Texas Tribune, and WordPress. These partnerships have been instrumental in Perplexity's success, providing it with a wide range of content to draw from and share revenue with its publisher partners when their content is referenced in answers.

In a significant development, Taz Patel left Perplexity on August 29, 2025. His departure came after the launch of the Perplexity Max subscription tier on July 2, 2025, which provides unlimited access to advanced AI models for $200 monthly.

Despite this change, Perplexity continues to push the boundaries of AI technology, offering innovative solutions in finance, advertising, and collaboration. The company's success is a testament to its commitment to delivering high-quality, AI-powered services to its users.
