Marketing operations in California by MegaBonanza halt in anticipation of AB 831 legislation

In the heart of California, a significant move is underway to reshape the gaming landscape. Assembly Bill 831 (AB 831), introduced by Assembly Member Avelino Valencia in mid-2025, seeks to ban sweepstakes casinos across the state.

The bill made a promising start, passing the Senate Governmental Organization Committee unanimously on July 8, 2025. This milestone marked a crucial step forward in the legislative process.

However, the journey doesn't end here. AB 831 now awaits a hearing by the Senate Public Safety Committee before it can progress further. After that, it will proceed to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

As of late July 2025, AB 831 has been referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee but has not yet been heard there. Although an exact hearing date is not yet provided, the bill's progression suggests it will be scheduled soon.

Meanwhile, in the world of sports and iGaming coverage, Richard Janvrin continues to make strides. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Richard began his professional sports coverage in 2015. He entered the iGaming space in 2018, where he has since covered various aspects, including news, reviews, bonuses/promotions, sweepstakes casinos, and legal issues.

Interestingly, one of the companies operating in the sweepstakes casino sector, MegaBonanza, has withdrawn marketing materials from California. Despite this, all games operated by MegaBonanza in California remain operational.

As the future of sweepstakes casinos in California hangs in the balance, the eyes of the gaming industry and its enthusiasts are firmly fixed on the Senate Appropriations Committee hearing scheduled for August 18, 2025. The decision made there could mark a turning point in the gaming landscape of the Golden State.
