According to an analysis by Sven Lehmann, fund manager of HQT Global Quality Dividend, the behaviour of stock prices, interest rates, and gold prices from 1978 to 2020, in the month before and after the Jackson Hole conference, has shown notable market reactions aligned with monetary policy signals during that period.
Lehmann's analysis focused on the S&P 500, three-month and ten-year interest rates, and the gold price in dollars. Interestingly, over the past 40 years, the gold price has performed best around the central bankers' meeting, with an average increase both before and after the meeting. Specifically, the gold price manages to gain around 3 percentage points on average during the two months surrounding the conference.
In the case of US stocks, they fell by an average of around one percentage point in the month before the annual central bankers' meeting. However, after the meeting, US stocks were back up. Short-term interest rates fell after the meeting, while long-term interest rates fell significantly before the meeting.
Compared to the long-term average, the deviations in US stocks are particularly strong before the central bankers' meeting. Lehmann's analysis covers the years from 1978 to 2020, and it suggests that the Jackson Hole conference holds a unique place in the financial world, influencing the performance of major asset classes.
