Maryland Governor Wes Moore launches his 2026 reelection bid, sparking discussions about a possible presidential run
Maryland Governor Wes Moore, who has been in office since 2023, recently announced his intention to seek a second term in 2026. In a video addressing the people of Maryland, Moore also addressed the speculation surrounding a potential presidential bid in 2028.
Moore, a former Army officer and celebrated author, has been elevating his national profile since his election in 2022. He has made a steady stream of appearances on Fox News and delivered a commencement address at Lincoln University, a historically Black college in Pennsylvania, in May.
During his commencement speech, Moore urged young graduates to embrace "real patriotism" and be part of the country's "betterment." He also highlighted his family ties to South Carolina, a critical early presidential primary state, and detailed lessons learned watching the Trump administration.
Last month, Moore criticized the Trump administration on Fox News as it considered broadening its crime and immigration crackdown to Baltimore. He remarked, "We can and we must condemn Donald Trump's reckless actions. But we would also be foolish not to learn from his impatience."
Moore's reelection campaign comes amidst speculation about a possible 2028 presidential candidacy. He has faced repeated questions about his future plans, particularly on shows like "Meet The Press" and "The View." However, Moore has stated that he is "not running" for president in 2028, but is focusing on his reelection.
Moore is seeking a second term in a deep-blue state, but he is among several high-profile Democrats up for reelection next year who could find themselves quickly pivoting to a presidential run. The list of high-profile Democrats includes Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
Despite the speculation, Moore has downplayed talk about his future plans. He traveled to South Carolina weeks later, where he delivered a commencement address at a historically Black college. Moore emphasized the importance of education, saying, "Education is the great equalizer, and it's the key to unlocking the full potential of every individual."
As Moore continues his reelection campaign, he is expected to face challenges from the Republican party. However, his national profile and strong stance on issues are likely to make him a formidable candidate in 2026 and potentially beyond.
