Massive Archaeological Excavations Kick Off on Yakut Island
Yakutsk to Witness Largest Archaeological Excavation in History with New Residential Complex
Preparations are underway for a significant archaeological excavation in Yakutsk, Russia. The site of interest, spanning over 2,000 square meters, is located at the intersection of Kalanadarisvil Street and Markov Zhirkov Lane in the 64th quarter. This land, initially marked as part of the city center on an 18th-century map of Yakutsk, is now planned for the construction of an eight-story residential complex.
The archaeological work at the site, known as the "Yakutsk Ostrog," will be conducted by the company "Utum+," with Georgii Karamzin, the company's head, stating that these excavations will be the largest in Yakutsk's history. The scientific research collective of LLC "Northern Archaeology-1," a company with extensive experience working in Russia's northern regions, has been engaged for the archaeological work at the "Yakutsk Ostrog" site.
The "Yakutsk Ostrog" has been a part of Yakutsk's construction since the 17th century, as confirmed by written sources and an 18th-century map of Yakutsk. In 2016, it was included in the list of identified cultural heritage sites of the RS (Yakutia). During exploratory work in 2012-2014, it was discovered that the land for the residential complex is located on the territory of the identified archaeological heritage site.
The upcoming work is not just about construction; it aims to fuse tradition and modernity. The main inspiration for the design is the chorten, symbolizing simplicity and severity. The historical corner will function as a museum of Yakutian history, featuring artifacts found during excavations.
The "Create History Together" project will include tours with archaeologists and will be implemented as part of the excavations. Andrei Vysokikh, Chairman of the Yakutsk branch of the All-Russia Society for the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments, proposed conducting tours for youth during excavations.
The territory will be greened, landscaped, and filled with attractions such as a gym, a coffee shop, and a historical corner. Oleg Karamzin, a representative of the company "Utum+," mentioned that initial excavations began as early as 2012.
The Yakutsk Republican Branch of the All-Russia Society for the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments is involved in the project. A meeting about the excavations was attended by representatives of Yakutsk archaeology, the All-Russian Society for the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments, and local residents.
The company "NPO Severnaya Archeologiya-1" was hired by the Ministry of Culture of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) for the excavations at the archaeological heritage site "Yakutsk Ostrog." The residential complex construction is planned to begin soon at the 64th quarter, where Kalanadarisvil Street and Markov Zhirkov Lane intersect.
