Massive blaze erupts at a high school in Hannover-Misburg

A devastating fire broke out at the Grundschule Mühlenweg in Hannover-Misburg on Thursday evening, causing significant damage and leaving the community in shock.

The fire started at 18:44, and the fire department in Hannover was promptly alerted. Upon arrival, the fire had already spread rapidly, damaging a fire service telescopic mast platform and causing injuries to two firefighters. The gymnasium, a large part of the school, is mostly burned out, and the roof of the hall has collapsed.

Two firefighters sustained burns during the initial firefighting efforts, and a rescue vehicle was damaged due to the high intensity of the fire. Fortunately, no further injuries were reported, and the fire did not spread to other school buildings, according to Deputy Chief Fleischmann.

The exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are still unknown at this time. Residents in the affected areas were advised via the NINA and KATWARN warning apps to keep doors and windows closed and to turn off ventilation systems as a precaution. The smoke cloud from the fire was visible over large parts of the eastern part of Hannover.

Mayor Belit Onay visited the scene and thanked the emergency services for their swift response. As of now, the emergency operations are still ongoing, with 110 personnel on site, and an additional 97 personnel on standby at fire and rescue stations and volunteer fire departments for potential parallel deployments.

The head of the schools department of the state capital of Hannover, Hans Jürgen Licht, announced that classes for all students of the Grundschule Mühlenweg will be canceled tomorrow, Friday.

The cost of the damage is estimated to be in millions. Press inquiries can be directed to the Fire Department Hannover, contact details provided.
