Massive influx of students imminent as Turkey commences the upcoming academic year
After a three-month summer break, school bells will ring again across all grades in Turkey on September 8, as approximately 20 million students return to classrooms. This year, the educational landscape in Turkey is set for some changes, with a widespread call for reform in the length of compulsory schooling and the government planning to revise it.
Education Minister Yusuf Tekin has confirmed that the government is reassessing the country's 12-year compulsory education system. However, the search results do not provide information on the Turkish government's planned measures regarding the revision of the twelve-year compulsory schooling period.
On the opening day, schools will screen a short film titled "A Sapling for Every Child" and distribute saplings to all primary school students. This initiative is part of the year's focus on instilling a love of nature in students and raising awareness of wildfire risks. The move comes in response to the summer's wildfires in Turkey, which lasted for days and forced the evacuation of thousands of people.
Schools will also conduct awareness sessions and activities during the first week, focusing on "protecting the green homeland against forest fires." Raising awareness of wildfire risks and promoting activities such as tree planting and forest cleanups are also part of the year's initiatives.
To ease traffic congestion, classes in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, will start an hour later than usual on the first day. The first semester will end on January 16, 2026, followed by a winter holiday from January 19 to 30. The first midterm break will be held between November 10 and 14, and schools will host commemorative events for Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's death anniversary the week prior to November 10.
Over 1 million teachers will also return to work on the same date, ready to guide the nation's youth through another academic year. Adaptation programs were held for preschoolers and first graders between September 1 and 5 to ensure a smooth transition back to school.
As the new academic year begins, it is clear that the focus is on rejuvenating the educational system and instilling a love for the environment in students. With these initiatives in place, the future of education in Turkey looks promising.
