Mattias Ekholm, Oilers defender, reveals contract truth before final season
Mattias Ekholm Expresses Desire to Stay in Edmonton Amid Contract Talks
Mattias Ekholm, the 35-year-old veteran defenseman for the Edmonton Oilers, has made it clear that he wants to continue his NHL career with the team. Ekholm, who joined the Oilers during the 2022–23 season, has been a valuable addition to the team, bringing his wealth of experience from his time with the Nashville Predators.
In the 2023-24 campaign, Ekholm posted a career-high 11 goals and 24 assists in 65 games, averaging more than 22 minutes of ice time per game. His point total during the 2024-25 season was slightly lower, with 33 points in 65 games, but his consistent performance has not gone unnoticed.
Ekholm's contract with the Oilers is set to expire at the end of the current season, and discussions about a new deal are ongoing. It's unclear when his agent will be speaking with team management, but Ekholm has made it clear that he would like to remain in Edmonton.
"I really enjoy playing here, and I feel like I've found a great fit with the team," Ekholm said. "I'd love to continue my career with the Oilers if we can work out a deal."
Ekholm knows that the club needs to work out deals with some younger players before negotiating his contract, including Connor McDavid, who is considered the face of the franchise and the most skilled player in the NHL. When asked about contract negotiations, Ekholm referred to McDavid as "the big boys."
"I understand that there are other priorities, and I'm willing to wait my turn," Ekholm said. "But I do want to make it clear that my family's security is important to me, and I hope that we can come to an agreement that works for everyone."
Ekholm's desire to stay in Edmonton comes at a crucial time for the team. The Oilers reached the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive season in 2023-24, but lost to the Florida Panthers. With the team's core players approaching the end of their contracts, the upcoming off-season will be a pivotal moment for the Oilers as they look to build on their success and compete for the Stanley Cup.
As the off-season approaches, Oilers fans will be keeping a close eye on contract negotiations with Ekholm and the rest of the team's key players. With his consistent performance and leadership on the ice, Ekholm will undoubtedly be a valuable asset to the team moving forward.
