Mayor Adams maintains his commitment to his re-election campaign, dismissing rumors of a possible withdrawal due to potential consideration for a position under Trump.
In the midst of his re-election campaign for New York City Mayor, Eric Adams has denied rumours of meeting with Trump administration officials and accepting a job offer.
Adams refuted reports suggesting he would be in Washington D.C. to meet with Trump officials on Monday, stating that his focus remains on the city's affairs. However, it has been reported that he met with Trump advisor Steve Witkoff in Florida, though no details about the meeting have been disclosed.
Rumours of a potential job offer for Adams within the Trump administration surfaced in September 2023, but no publicly verified information is available to support this claim. Adams has denied these reports, insisting he will remain in the race and believes he can win.
Andrew Cuomo, former Governor of New York, has not expressed a desire for Trump to be involved in his own candidacy, but has not ruled out the possibility for Adams or Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo stated that he had not spoken to Trump in over a year.
The affordability crisis in the city has been a key focus for Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani's campaign. Mamdani has accused both Adams and Cuomo of being responsible for the city's current state, and has gone as far as to accuse Cuomo of colluding with Trump to clear Adams out of the race.
Adams, in response, has accused Cuomo of being a "snake and a liar" during his independent campaign for a second term. He has also suggested that reports of his seeking a job in Trump's administration may be part of a history of Cuomo derailing other Black politicians. However, Adams did not provide evidence to support this claim.
Cuomo, for his part, has denied having any knowledge of Trump's machinations. He stated that going backwards is not an option for the city, and emphasised his own progress in guiding New York City's post-pandemic recovery.
Adams has highlighted his progress in reducing crime, guiding the city's post-pandemic recovery, and eliminating street homelessness since taking office in 2022. He also emphasised that he is the only one who can beat Mamdani in the upcoming election.
In addition to the ambassador position to Saudi Arabia, Adams is also being considered for other high-level positions within the U.S. government. However, Adams has maintained his focus on his re-election campaign, vowing to continue fighting for the people of New York City.
