Mayor's plan aims to adjust direction and boost competitiveness within the automotive and industrial sectors
In a bid to safeguard the future of Germany's industrial heartland, a coalition of mayors from cities such as Zwickau, Ingolstadt, Saarlouis, Wolfsburg, Stuttgart, Munich, and others have joined the "Mayors for a strong automotive location" initiative. These cities, representing locations where the future of hundreds of thousands of jobs is at stake, have come together to advocate for reliable framework conditions that will secure competitiveness and maintain jobs.
Industrial electricity prices in Germany are significantly higher than the European and international level, a fact that weakens production and threatens the attractiveness of the industrial location. The mayors argue that Europe needs sensible industry policy and reliable framework conditions to keep up internationally.
The openness to technology is considered beneficial for climate protection, and the initiative's core demands, anchored in the coalition agreement, include openness to technology, suspension of CO2 penalty payments for vehicle fleets, promotion of all climate-friendly drive forms, and the expansion of charging and hydrogen infrastructure.
Excessive bureaucracy costs the German economy up to 146 billion euros per year in lost economic performance, according to a current ifo study. The mayors have called for a reduction in bureaucratic burdens to improve operational efficiency.
The automotive summit is expected to set a course to prevent a massive loss of prosperity, innovative power, and future viability in Europe. The mayors have also voiced their support for the initiative's other demands, such as innovation promotion and no additional burdens for citizens and municipalities through the transformation.

The initiative's demands, which include no additional burdens for citizens and municipalities through the transformation, are crucial in maintaining the attractiveness of these industrial locations. Without reliable framework conditions, production sites may move away, jobs may be lost, and investments may flow to regions with more favorable conditions. The future of the industrial location should be a central focus of the debate.
