In a significant move, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) in Nairobi have secured enough signatures to initiate the impeachment motion against Governor Johnson Sakaja. The grounds for the motion are substantive, with key charges including corruption, misuse of public funds, misconduct, and failure to fulfill promises made to city residents.

The MCAs have been trying to highlight development issues to Governor Sakaja, but have received no response. Joseph Ndung'u, Kiamaiko MCA, has questioned the transparency of the school meal initiative, asking where the five shillings paid by parents for the county's school meals are going. The MCAs allege that corruption is rampant in the implementation of the county's school feeding program.

Sospeter Mumbi, Roysambu MCA, claims that impeaching the governor is simply the exercise of their roles of representation, oversight, and legislation. Mumbi states that when MCAs allocate money for Ward Development Funds, contractors are not being paid. Similarly, when budgets are approved for infrastructure, the roads are not done, and when funds are allocated for bursaries, they are not realized.

Mumbi mentions that there were demonstrations by residents in his ward over poor roads, but there was no response from the Executive. In his ward, Mumbi experienced demonstrations by residents over poor roads. Robert Alai, Kilimani MCA, stated that Governor Sakaja has been making excuses, including being too busy to solve the problems.

The Nairobi County Assembly, which comprises 122 members, has approximately 100 members who have backed the impeachment process against Governor Sakaja. The MCAs plan to request the Speaker of the Assembly, Kennedy Ng'ondi, to call a special sitting once the signature collection is concluded.

No one is influencing the MCAs in their decision to impeach Governor Sakaja, according to the ward representatives. Mumbi reiterates that Governor Sakaja has been an "unresponsive leader who ignores their written reminders". The MCAs plan to press approximately 20 charges against Governor Sakaja to oust him from office.
