McLaren's limelight is snatched by Alonso's theatrical performance.
McLaren Shines in Dutch Grand Prix Practice Sessions
The first day of practice for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort saw an exciting battle among the top teams, with McLaren emerging as a strong contender.
Fernando Alonso, driving for McLaren, set the second fastest lap of the day, missing out on pole by a mere 0.087 seconds. His fastest lap was sandwiched between those of his teammate Lando Norris, who secured the top spot with an impressive performance.
Norris, who is aiming to repeat his 2022 success, demonstrated his formidable skills on the challenging Zandvoort track. His fastest lap time was not matched by any other driver, putting him in a strong position for qualifying.
The MCL39 seems to perform well on a mix of all corner types, a trait that is crucial for success on the undulating Zandvoort circuit. This was evident in Alonso's performance during long-run practice, where he finished second on the medium tires.
However, not all teams had a smooth practice session. Aston Martin completed only half the laps of the fastest driver, Lando Norris, during practice. Oscar Piastri struggled to find his rhythm, and the team could not make up for the lost time.
Ferrari, who had been in good form in recent races, could not maintain their momentum at Zandvoort. The drivers reported balance issues, and Charles Leclerc could not find a clear lap during practice. Despite these challenges, Leclerc was faster than Lewis Hamilton, who spun twice during practice.
Red Bull's motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, believes that the McLarens will be unbeatable at Zandvoort, given their strong performance in practice. This sentiment is shared by many, as cars that performed well in Hungary, another track requiring maximum downforce, also showed strong performance in Zandvoort.
As the Dutch Grand Prix approaches, the battle for pole position and race victory promises to be intense. With McLaren showing strong form, it will be interesting to see if they can maintain their momentum and secure a podium finish.
