Breaking News: Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH Recalls Zwiebelmettwurst Due to EHEC Contamination

In a significant public health announcement, Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH has recalled its Zwiebelmettwurst in 500-gram packages. The recall, announced on Friday, comes after the discovery of toxin-producing Escherichia coli (EHEC) bacteria in a batch of the product with a minimum shelf life of 27.08.

EHEC can cause severe illnesses, particularly in vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions. This bacteria can lead to serious health complications, including kidney failure, severe diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure.

The Zwiebelmettwurst, produced by Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH, located in the city of Schleiz, was available in several regions across Germany, including Baden-Württemberg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Saxony, and Thuringia.

Recent increases in EHEC infections have been reported in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with children being particularly affected. It is advisable to avoid consuming the Schleizer Zwiebelmettwurst due to the risk of EHEC contamination.

Customers who have purchased the affected Zwiebelmettwurst are urged to return the product to the store for a full refund. The incubation period for EHEC-related illnesses is typically three to four days after consuming a contaminated food.

It is worth noting that EHEC infections were linked to a major outbreak in Germany in 2011, with approximately 3,800 cases and over 50 deaths. The suspected source of the 2011 outbreak was contaminated sprouts from Egyptian broccoli seeds.

Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH has assured customers of its commitment to food safety and quality, and has initiated a thorough investigation into the cause of the contamination.

We urge everyone to exercise caution and follow the advice of health authorities regarding the consumption of the Schleizer Zwiebelmettwurst. For more information, please visit the Schleizer Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH website or contact your local health department.
