Measures to thwart oak spinners infestations

The city of Gießen is gearing up for a city-wide fight against the Pine Processionary Caterpillar (EPP), an inconspicuous night moth that lays its larvae particularly in pines. The infestation has been a recurring issue in the city, causing potential damage to trees and unpleasant effects on humans, as its hairs can cause allergies.

From May 10, 2023, the Garden Department of the City of Gießen, along with other property management services, will take measures against the EPP. The treatment, which is scheduled to last for an estimated duration of one week, will involve the spraying of approximately 2000 trees with the agent NeemProtect.

The route for the treatment includes several areas across the city: Inner city, East city, Rödgen, Weicker, North city, West city, Petersweiher/ Schiffenberg, South city, Kleinlinden, Allenorf, Lützellinden, and the Anneröder settlement, which is among the residential areas with high pine populations that will be treated preferentially.

Sensitive areas such as kindergartens, schools, playgrounds, sports facilities, leisure facilities, park facilities, and residential areas with high pine populations will also be treated preferentially to ensure the safety of the city's residents.

Several institutions, including Justus Liebig University, the Student Union Gießen, WevaTo, Wohnbau Gießen, the Vitos Clinic, among others, will participate in the city-wide effort against the EPP. Samuel Kähler, the responsible person for Justus Liebig University in efforts against EPP in Gießen, will lead the university's participation.

It's important to note that the measures are weather-dependent, which may result in delays. The treatment does not pose a risk to citizens, but the instructions of the on-site employees should be followed to ensure that the necessary work is completed quickly and effectively.

The city of Gießen is taking active steps to combat the EPP infestation, marking the continuation of the city-wide, broad-based fight against the EPP that has been ongoing for multiple years. The aim of these measures is to prevent the damage caused by the Pine Processionary Caterpillar and protect humans from its allergic effects, ensuring the health and well-being of the city's residents and its trees.
