In a significant turn of events, Lachlan Murdoch, the eldest son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, has secured undisputed control over News Corp. and Fox Corporation following a September 2025 settlement. This new family trust will steer influential media companies such as Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, The Sun, and The Times, continuing the Murdoch family's conservative political and business influence.

The agreement marks the end of a long-standing family feud over the control of Murdoch's media empire. Rupert Murdoch, concerned about the potential change in the political direction of his media outlets after his death, had expressed his apprehensions in the past.

James Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch's liberal-minded son, publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the programming of Fox News. He specifically criticized baseless claims about the 2020 US presidential election being spread on Fox News, which some critics accuse Fox and News Corp of contributing to through sensational journalism and right-wing propaganda, not just in the US.

Other descendants of the family patriarch will be compensated generously for this agreement. The trust and the companies did not comment on the payout to the Murdoch children. Wendi Deng, Rupert Murdoch's ex-wife, will have family trusts for her daughters Grace and Chloe, as stated in a recent announcement.

The previous family trust was controlled by four Murdoch children: Lachlan, James, Prudence, and Elisabth. Last year, Rupert Murdoch attempted to transfer control of the family trust to Lachlan alone, which was blocked by the other three children in a lawsuit filed in Nevada.

With the current agreement, James, Prudence, and Elisabeth Murdoch will give up their shares in the family trust and receive a payout of approximately $1.1 billion each. Lachlan Murdoch, considered staunchly right-wing conservative, will have the final say in the new family trust that controls Fox Corporation and News Corp.

Critics accuse Fox and News Corp of contributing to the rise of political populists like Trump through their journalism and right-wing propaganda. However, with Lachlan Murdoch at the helm, the future direction of these influential news outlets remains to be seen.

Rupert Murdoch's media empire includes influential news outlets such as Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, and the British Times. With Lachlan Murdoch in control, the conservative political direction of these outlets and newspapers is now secure for the future, according to Murdoch's plans.
