Discussion underway over troop deployment in Ukraine labelled a 'pretend debate' by Melnyk - Melnyk alleges that the talks regarding troop deployment to Ukraine are merely a "pretend argument"
In a recent interview, Andrij Melnyk, the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Nations, expressed his frustration and disappointment over the international community's response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
Melnyk, who previously served as ambassador to Germany, apologized for any offenses caused during his time in Berlin. His statements were made after the Russian attack on Ukraine, although the specific timeline is not clear. The interview took place after the Russian attack, and Melnyk did not mention any new discussions or negotiations with the US President Donald Trump regarding the war in Ukraine.
Melnyk criticized the international community for not doing enough to support Ukraine, particularly at the United Nations. He expressed a sense of urgency during his time in Germany, often having to act impulsively to seek help. Despite this, he holds Germany in high regard, considering it his second home.
The ambassador also expressed his frustration with the lack of accountability for Russia's atrocities in Ukraine. He made a metaphorical gesture of frustration towards those who shake hands with the Russians while Russia commits atrocities in Ukraine.
The issue of troop deployment in Ukraine has been a topic of ongoing discussions and tensions. Melnyk stated that discussions about troop deployment are currently a "sham debate." He expressed that security guarantees in a contractual form are necessary before he could imagine European troops' involvement.
The German federal government views the deployment of EU peacekeeping troops in Ukraine as a possible component of future security guarantees embedded in a formal treaty, but with caution about the scale and capacity of such involvement. While Defense Committee head Thomas Röwekamp considers German participation likely if a peace agreement occurs, there is concern—expressed by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul—that the Bundeswehr could be overstretched by such a mission.
Melnyk agreed with the German government's argument on the issue of troop deployment in Ukraine. He welcomed the start of talks by US President Donald Trump to end the war in Ukraine, despite describing the process as a "roller coaster."
In the past, Melnyk called on then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to initiate diplomatic mediation to end the war in Ukraine, but nothing happened at the time. Melnyk's previous statements as ambassador in Berlin contributed to personal and diplomatic tensions between Germany and Ukraine. However, Melnyk apologized for these statements, which caused personal and diplomatic tensions between Germany and his home country in the first months after the Russian attack on Ukraine.
The ambassador's statements were made in reference to the ongoing discussions and tensions regarding troop deployment in Ukraine. Melnyk did not specify if he was referring to a specific peacekeeping force or troop deployment in his frustration. Nevertheless, his comments highlight the urgency and complexity of the situation in Ukraine and the need for a concerted international effort to bring about a peaceful resolution.
