Obituary: Frank Caprio, Beloved TV Judge and Icon of Kindness, Honoured in Providence

Frank Caprio, the renowned television judge known for his compassion and kindness, was laid to rest in a moving funeral service held in Providence, Rhode Island. The Mass was presided over by the Archbishop of Boston at the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Paul.

Caprio, who passed away on Aug. 20 at the age of 88 from pancreatic cancer, was a beacon of positivity in his courtroom, often showing leniency and understanding. His legacy lives on, as people from all over the world travelled to Rhode Island to pay tribute to the beloved judge.

Caprio grew up in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Providence, as the second of three boys in an Italian immigrant family. His father worked as a milk deliveryman and a fruit peddler, instilling in Caprio a strong sense of compassion and empathy. Caprio learned the importance of helping those in need from his father, who continued to deliver milk to those who couldn't afford to pay.

Caprio's biography, "Compassion in Court: Life-Changing Stories from America's Nicest Judge," highlights his life-changing impact on the lives of countless individuals. In his courtroom, Caprio was known for his ability to connect with people on a personal level, often asking for their stories and showing genuine concern.

Father Bob Marciano, pastor of Saint Kevin Parish in Providence, attributed Caprio's online fame to his authenticity. "Frank was a judge who truly cared about the people he served," said Father Marciano. "He was a man of the people, and his compassion and kindness shone through in everything he did."

Caprio's funeral service was prepared by the clergy of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence. The service was livestreamed on Judge Caprio's social media pages, allowing people from all corners of the globe to pay their respects.

Supporters of Frank Caprio were travelling to Rhode Island from as far as the Philippines to attend his services. Freida Adams, a Providence resident, waited in line to pay her respects to Caprio, recalling an interaction with him in his courtroom where he asked for her story and was moved by her being a foster mother to 27 children.

Caprio's family was moved by the outpouring of support since Caprio's passing, receiving "thousands of requests from people around the world" who wanted to pray with the family at Caprio's service. Caprio's cousin, Carol Caprio Stravato, grew up on the same street as Caprio in tenement buildings.

In a 2017 interview, Caprio emphasized his desire to change the world by doing his part to dispel negative thoughts and feelings about the institutions of government. Caprio aimed to dispel distrust of the institutions of government and lack of understanding, compassion, and kindness.

Caprio's son said the outpouring of love and support his family has received has been overwhelming. "Dad touched so many lives, and it's amazing to see the impact he had on people," said Caprio's son. "We're grateful for the love and support we've received during this difficult time."

People from all over the world lined up to pay tribute to Frank Caprio during memorial services at his home. Caprio's legacy will continue to live on, as a reminder of the power of kindness and compassion in the face of adversity.
