Meta and Robby Starbuck have resolved their legal dispute concerning allegations of defamation stemming from an AI chatbot.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has reached a settlement with anti-DEI activist Robby Starbuck. As part of the agreement, Starbuck will serve as a consultant to Meta's Product Policy team, working to eliminate political bias in its AI models.
The settlement comes after a lawsuit filed by Starbuck in April 2023, alleging that Meta's AI chatbot defamed him by falsely accusing him of being a "White nationalist" and claiming he was arrested on Jan. 6. The chatbot also alleged that Starbuck had been sued for defamation and was a danger to his children.
Meta has acknowledged the issue, stating that addressing political bias in its AI models has been a longstanding goal. The company hired Starbuck to help combat perceived political bias in its AI models and reduce the risk of "hallucinations" generated by the chatbot.
Starbuck, who has been vocal about his concerns about ideological bias in AI, believes his work with Meta could set an industry standard for fairness in AI training. He intends to ensure no American of any political stripe is subject to ideological bias in Meta's AI.
Meta's decision to hire Starbuck as a consultant comes amidst concerns about political bias in AI across multiple platforms. ChatGPT, for instance, has been accused of anti-conservative bias. In response, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has implemented programs to combat bias in its models.
Interestingly, Meta's executive shake-up has also seen Joel Kaplan, a former Republican political consultant, being promoted to Meta's chief global affairs officer. Kaplan stated that ending Meta's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policies would ensure Meta builds teams with the most talented people.
With the settlement, Starbuck and Meta have agreed to work collaboratively in the coming months to address issues of ideological and political bias and minimize the risk of "hallucinations" in their AI models. Starbuck's work with Meta could mark a significant step towards ensuring fairness and accuracy in AI models across the industry.
