Meta Temporarily Removes AI Profiles in Response to Outcry, Expecting Their Return Later

Meta's AI profiles, including characters like Liv and Carter, have recently gained renewed attention due to users engaging them in conversations. These AI-generated personas, simulating human-like interactions, were first introduced on Meta's platforms in September 2023.

Initially, these AI profiles were designed to attract a younger audience and compete with popular platforms like TikTok and Snapchat. Hundreds of thousands of characters have been created using Meta's AI character tool, although most remain private.

However, the introduction of these accounts has not been without controversy. Viral discussions arose about the development teams' lack of diversity, leading to increased scrutiny and criticism. The discontinuation of these AI profiles highlights this growing concern.

By summer 2024, most of these AI profiles will be removed. The decision was made due to user backlash and issues with blocking the accounts. It's worth noting that some users may have felt angry and betrayed when they found out they were talking to an AI, especially if they had wanted to meet in person. Conversely, if a user never wanted to meet in person, they might have continued the conversation unaware they were chatting with an AI.

Despite the discontinuation, Meta is not stepping away from AI interactions on its platforms. In fact, the company is introducing new AI-generated user accounts on Facebook and Instagram. These AI profiles will likely be clearly identified as such, but some users may still interact with them unaware they aren't human.

Looking to the future, Meta will release its own AI profiles on its apps. The new AI profiles, set to debut in fall 2024, represent AI-powered interaction features that allow users to create customized AI characters with unique voices. However, no specific real persons are stated to be depicted by these profiles. They are AI-generated personas rather than representations of actual individuals.

The question of whether it matters that a conversational partner is human arises in light of fulfilling, meaningful, or entertaining AI interactions. As AI technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how users adapt and engage with these digital companions.
