Mexico City deploys Kapsch intelligent traffic system license plate identification technology
The Palmillas - Apaseo Highway, northwest of Mexico City, has been equipped with an advanced Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) developed by Kapsch TrafficCom. This state-of-the-art system aims to prevent illegal entries and exits, improve road safety, and facilitate smooth traffic flow.
The project includes the installation of various traffic management and monitoring devices. Twenty-one traffic cameras have been set up to provide real-time tracking of each vehicle, along with five traffic counting points with axle-based classification. Two weigh-in-motion stations have also been installed to monitor the weight of vehicles. Additionally, a Vehicle Integrity System based on License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras has been implemented, allowing continuous vehicle tracking along the highway.
One of the key features of the system is the ability to calculate travel times for each subsection and the entire section, as well as providing visibility of queue times at toll plazas and hourly occupancy levels. This real-time information is integrated into Kapsch TrafficCom's EcoTrafiX system for centralised real-time monitoring and operational decision-making from a control center.
In case of anomalies, such as 'lost' vehicles, the system sends automatic alerts to the control center to enhance road safety. The system also generates origin-destination matrices, providing valuable data for traffic analysis and management.
The implementation of this Intelligent Traffic System on the Palmillas - Apaseo Highway is a collaborative effort between Mexican government agencies and technology companies specialising in smart transportation solutions. This project is part of a broader trend in the transportation industry, as discussed in the conference series "Road User Charging Conference", which covers topics such as tolling, road pricing, and usage-charges in various cities worldwide, including Miami, Singapore, Brussels, and Abu Dhabi.
In summary, the installation of the Intelligent Transportation System on the Palmillas - Apaseo Highway is a significant step towards improving road safety, traffic management, and user experience on this important route.
