Michael Stipe clarifies the ambiguous lyrics of R.E.M.'s hit single 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It' after three decades

In an exciting development for music fans, iconic alternative rock band R.E.M. has announced a series of special events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their seminal album, 'Lifes Rich Pageant', scheduled for 2026.

The band, led by Michael Stipe and known for their association with the genres Alternative and Indie, will be taking 'Lifes Rich Pageant' on the road, marking four decades since its original release in 1986.

Meanwhile, in May 2025, R.E.M. unveiled details of 'Radio Free Europe 2025', a benefit EP featuring a never-before-released remix of their debut single. The limited-edition 10-inch orange-vinyl pressing of this EP will be available from September 12, 2025.

R.E.M.'s 1990s albums 'Monster' and 'New Adventures In Hi-Fi' will also be part of the series Silents Synced in 2023. This unique series pairs classic silent films with contemporary music, and R.E.M.'s albums will be accompanying Buster Keaton's 'Sherlock Jr' and other films.

Actor Michael Shannon and Chicago musician Jason Narducy will be joining R.E.M. for their 2026 tour, where they will be performing full-album shows. In a memorable moment from their 2022 tour, all four members of R.E.M. joined them on stage for a full-band version of 'Pretty Persuasion' in Athens, Georgia.

Fans of R.E.M. will also be intrigued to know the correct lyrics to their popular song, 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It'. The misunderstood lines are: "Left of west and coming in a hurry with the Furies breathing down your neck," and "Team by team reporters, baffled, trumped, tethered, cropped, Look".

R.E.M.'s 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It' was first released on their fifth album 'Document' in 1987. With these upcoming events, it seems that R.E.M.'s influence and legacy continue to resonate strongly in the world of music and beyond.
