Military aircraft from NATO swiftly responded as Russia deployed 537 drones towards Ukraine.
In a series of escalating events, Ukraine has found itself at the centre of a renewed conflict, with numerous attacks reported across the country.
Last night, Russian forces launched a bombardment on Ukraine, targeting several cities including Zaporizhia, Kyiv, Pavlohrad, Dnipro, Chernihiv, Lutsk, and Cherkasy. The attack on Zaporizhia resulted in at least one fatality and left 24 people injured, according to reports. Homes and shops in the city were reduced to rubble, and the regional military administration chief, Ivan Fedorov, confirmed that private houses were destroyed and many facilities were damaged.
The Ukrainian army reported success in their efforts, claiming to have destroyed 510 drones and 38 missiles. However, the overnight attack left dozens wounded, and more people are believed to be trapped under the rubble. The most devastating blow was felt in Kyiv, where nineteen people, including three children, were killed in a strike, as confirmed by President Zelensky.
The international community has responded swiftly to these attacks. Nato jets in Poland, near the Ukraine border, were scrambled in response to the attack. Both the UK and the wider European Union have summoned the Russian envoy, expressing concern over the escalating situation. The Russian ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrey Kelin, was called to the Foreign Office due to the attack on Ukraine.
The bombardment also hit the British Council in Kyiv, causing further international outcry. In a statement from the White House, it was confirmed that Russia launched an attack on Kyiv. The press secretary for Mr. Trump stated that the president is "not happy, but not surprised" about the attack.
Ukraine's military had previously dealt a significant blow to Russia's oil refineries, targeting two Russian oil refineries in Krasnodar and Syzran. This recent attack on Ukraine's civilian population and infrastructure marks a concerning escalation in the ongoing conflict.
