Military exercises carried out along the northern shores, highlighted as the focal point of the ongoing drills series
Headline: Germany Kicks Off Quadriga 2025 Exercise Series with Northern Coasts Sub-Exercise
The German Armed Forces have commenced the Quadriga 2025 exercise series, with a focus on the maritime exercise Northern Coasts taking place in the Baltic Sea from September 1 to 12, 2025. This annual event, first initiated by the German Navy in 2007, brings together approximately 8,400 soldiers and around 40 units from 14 nations.
The main goal of Northern Coasts is to develop land and alliance defense capabilities, demonstrate presence in the sea area, and strengthen cooperation and military capabilities of the Baltic Sea navies. Rear Admiral Stephan Haisch, who leads the international naval task force in Northern Coasts, emphasizes that the exercise focuses on realistic threat scenarios from all dimensions: air, land, sea, and cyber.
Most of the participating naval units will gather at the naval base in Kiel at the start of the exercise. The German Navy will involve surface and underwater units, naval aviation, and marine security forces during the exercise. Recreational boaters are asked to navigate with extra caution and maintain a safe distance in the Kiel Bight during the exercise.
The four core participating nations alongside Germany in the Quadriga 2025 exercise series and the Northern Coasts sub-exercise include the USA, the Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom. Additional participating countries in Northern Coasts are Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium, and Canada.
Rear Admiral Haisch, who leads the international naval task force, underlines the importance of the exercise in enhancing reaction and deployment capabilities in crisis and conflict situations, and further developing leadership capabilities and cooperation between my staff and partner navies.
