The Israeli army is preparing for a major offensive against the city of Gaza, although the specific details of the operation remain unclear. Amidst this looming threat, the Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone, a designated safe area established to provide essential services to the civilian population during military operations, is struggling to cope with the influx of people.

The Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone, located near Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, is currently home to approximately 425,000 people, occupying an area of about nine square kilometers. Residents of the city of Gaza, particularly those in the northern part, are being urged by the Israeli army to move to this area as soon as possible.

The humanitarian zone boasts significant infrastructure, including field hospitals, water pipelines, and desalination plants. However, the capacities of the field clinics and the provision of latrines, communal toilets, and waste disposal facilities are insufficient to cater to the large number of people. UN organizations have expressed concerns about the inadequacy of these facilities.

The Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone was initially designated as a safe area during the Israeli army's previous offensive against the Islamic Hamas in northern and central Gaza. Despite this, the zone remains a strategic location for the delivery of aid and medical services during military operations in Gaza.

The residents of the Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone live in vast tent camps. As of June, almost a million people are living in the city of Gaza, and less than 100,000 have left due to the impending offensive. The overcrowding in the humanitarian zone is a significant concern, as it could exacerbate the existing issues with sanitation and healthcare.

It's important to note that there is no available information on who proposed designating the Khan Yunis port in Gaza as a humanitarian zone before the Israeli army's offensive.

As the Israeli armed forces intensify air strikes in preparation for the offensive, the situation in the Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone continues to be a pressing concern. The international community is urged to provide additional support to ensure the safety and well-being of the civilians in this area.
