Military authorities in Israel designate specific region within Gaza as a "humanitarian zone" - Military forces of Israel declare Gaza as a "humanitarian area"
In the northern part of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army has designated a small coastal area, Al-Mawasi, as a humanitarian zone. This announcement comes ahead of an anticipated major offensive in the city of Gaza, which has been home to nearly one million people.
The humanitarian zone, a nine-square-kilometer area, is significant as it houses crucial infrastructure such as field hospitals, water pipelines, and desalination plants. However, the capacities of the field clinics in Al-Mawasi are inadequate given the large number of people residing there.
The Israeli government's war against Hamas is taking place in the city of Gaza. The Israeli army is urging the civilian population in the city to move to the Al-Mawasi area as soon as possible. Currently, the zone is overcrowded with around 425,000 people living in massive tent camps.
UN organizations have described the provision of latrines, communal toilets, and waste disposal in Al-Mawasi as insufficient. Humanitarian aid is being delivered to the area, but the situation remains dire.
Less than 100,000 people have left the city of Gaza due to the impending offensive. The Israeli army is intensifying air strikes in preparation for their corresponding offensive. The coastal region in Gaza where the Israeli army plans to militarily occupy is blockaded.
The Israeli army had previously declared Al-Mawasi a "humanitarian zone" in December 2023. The Israeli army is targeting the Islamic Hamas in northern and central Gaza. It is unclear when the major offensive will commence.
The city of Gaza is located in the Middle East. The humanitarian zone, Al-Mawasi, is a vital area in the ongoing conflict, offering some respite for the civilian population amidst the escalating tensions.
