Military officials to ease regulations, permitting more animals in living quarters, following ministers' decision to streamline regulations.
The British Government has announced a series of measures aimed at enhancing the living conditions for military families, as part of an ongoing effort to improve service accommodation. Defence Secretary John Healey unveiled a new "consumer charter" in April, which includes provisions for more reliable repairs, a named housing officer for every service family, and a higher minimum standard for housing.
Recognising that military families have lived in substandard housing without basic consumer rights for too long, the Government is taking steps to rectify this situation. The new charter is a key milestone in delivering on the promise to improve military accommodation.
One of the notable changes introduced this week is the relaxation of rules regarding pets. Service personnel and their families are now allowed to keep up to two dogs, cats, or smaller pets without needing permission in military housing. Defence Minister Al Carns, who served as a Royal Marine for 24 years, part of which was spent in service accommodation, expressed delight at making it easier for service personnel to own family pets.
The Ministry of Defence recognises the "vital role" pets play in family life and mental wellbeing. These new measures are part of the Government's efforts to deliver on the consumer charter to improve military accommodation.
In addition to the pet-related changes, other modifications have been made to give service personnel more freedom to personalise their accommodation. The Government has brought 36,000 military homes back into public ownership as part of an effort to reduce costs and improve standards.
