Military strikes Hamas headquarters in Qatar by Israeli forces
In a significant turn of events, Israel has launched an airstrike on the leadership of the Islamist organization Hamas, based in Doha, Qatar. The attack, codenamed "Operation Pine Peak," has sparked international condemnation and diplomatic fallout.
The Israeli military, using fighter jets and drones, targeted residential areas where members of Hamas' political bureau lived. Among those reportedly killed is Khalil al-Haya, a high-ranking Hamas leader abroad, although this has not been officially confirmed. The highest-ranking Hamas official who resided in Doha, Khalil al-Haya, survived the airstrike on September 9, 2025, but his son, Himam al-Hayya, and his office head were among those killed.
Qatar strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a "flagrant violation" of international laws and a "serious threat" to Qatar's security. The Emirati Foreign Minister, Abdullah bin Zayed, posted a message of full solidarity with Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates stand in solidarity with Qatar, condemning the attack as a "deceptive Israeli strike." Jordan's foreign minister described the attack as "cowardly aggression" and a violation of international law.
Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, confirmed that Israel took full responsibility for the attack. Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, issued a warning to Hamas, threatening a "massive hurricane" and destruction if they do not disarm and release hostages. Israeli Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, has threatened attacks on Hamas leaders abroad, including those residing in Qatar.
The Hamas political office in Qatar has been under increasing pressure to close following the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel. The Israeli military stated that the targeted Hamas leaders were responsible for the "brutal massacre of October 7" and the "war against the State of Israel."
US President, Donald Trump, is reported to have given the attack the green light in advance, according to Israeli government officials. Trump issued a "final warning" to Hamas, aiming to force a diplomatic solution before Israel's further advance in the Gaza conflict. UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has sharply criticized the Israeli attack on the leadership of Hamas in Qatar, calling it a violation of Qatar's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In response to the attack, Qatar has temporarily suspended its role as a mediator between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza conflict. This development could potentially complicate ongoing efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
This airstrike marks a significant escalation in the Israel-Hamas conflict, and its implications for regional stability and diplomatic relations remain to be seen. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and calling for restraint and adherence to international law.
