The Defense Department (DoD) has announced the establishment of a new task force aimed at countering the growing threat of hostile drones and promoting sovereignty over national airspace. The joint, interagency task force, known as Joint Interagency Task Force 401 (JTIAF 401), will be led by the Army and will focus on enhancing the DoD's small unmanned systems capabilities.

According to a DoD news release, the task force's primary goal is to protect personnel, equipment, and facilities. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has been directed to stand up the task force, and the memo issuing the directive was issued by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The task force's implementation plan, including required resources, structure, and authorities, must be provided within 30 days. The plan must be designed to allow the task force to execute at speed and scale, with a focus on speed over process.

The task force's goal is to better align authorities and resources to rapidly deliver counter-small unmanned aerial systems capabilities to U.S. warfighters. The task force will report to the deputy secretary of defense and will work closely with other government agencies to address the threat posed by hostile drones, both at home and overseas.

Hostile drones pose a significant threat to U.S. warfighters, bases, and U.S. national airspace, both domestically and overseas. The JTIAF 401 will focus on improving mobility, affordability, and integration of counter-small unmanned aerial systems capabilities into warfighter formations.

The Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office, established in 2020, will be disestablished and replaced with the new task force. The task force is intended to defeat adversary threats and promote sovereignty over national airspace.

The DoD has emphasised the importance of this task force in ensuring the safety and security of U.S. personnel, equipment, and facilities. The task force will play a crucial role in maintaining the U.S.'s military superiority and protecting its national interests in the face of increasing drone threats.
