Mindful Mood: "No Room for Runners-up: 'Only One Triumphant'"
German Armed Forces Brace for Potential Conflicts Amid Increased Tensions
In a shift from foreign deployments, the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) are now primarily focused on territorial and alliance defense, as tensions within the country and in neighboring regions have escalated.
The rise in sabotage, espionage, and preparations for military incidents has prompted this change, with the war in Ukraine significantly altering deployment scenarios for the Bundeswehr. A combat-ready German brigade is currently stationed in Lithuania, serving as a testament to this new focus.
The honours bestowed upon the soldiers reflect the bravery and leadership demonstrated in challenging situations. Sergeant Major Jan Hecht, for instance, was awarded the Cross of Honor for Bravery in 2009, following a five-hour combat encounter in Afghanistan.
Hecht, along with his 36-man platoon, was inspecting a rarely used connecting road for explosives when they encountered an ambush, with approximately 80 attackers. In the ensuing battle, Hecht and his team fought their way free and were engaged in a second battle a little further on.
Courage, according to Hecht, is a reflective process, acknowledging the possibility of harm or causing harm to others. Every soldier swears an oath to be brave, and courage combined with bravery can lead to extraordinary feats, such as putting oneself in harm's way to protect comrades or complete a mission despite obstacles.
However, in a combat situation, rational thought about what to do next is practically impossible, Hecht states. This underscores the importance of training and preparation, as a military confrontation can start unexpectedly, requiring the German Armed Forces to be prepared at all times.
Recruitment for the German Armed Forces has become more military in nature, with young recruits showing increased seriousness. Yet, maintaining a mindset for defending in demanding or inhuman situations is a challenge for a deeply civilian society.
To withstand an attack from the Russian military apparatus, a mindset beyond just weaponry is needed, often referred to as "mindset" or attitude. Debates are ongoing about Germany's potential participation in security guarantees for Ukraine.
In recent years, Bundeswehr units have received special training to become more effective in the event of a military conflict with Russia. This includes tank battalions equipped with Leopard 2 tanks, particularly those upgraded to the Leopard 2A7V and A6MA3/A6A3 standards, enhancing their combat capability, communication systems, and fire control to adapt to modern warfare scenarios with Russia.
Soldiers today are aware that there is a war in Europe. The Honor Cross serves as a role model for initiative and leadership among soldiers, reminding them of the courage and bravery required in their duties. The German Armed Forces continue to prepare for the unexpected, upholding the values of courage and leadership in the face of adversity.
