Ritter Sport, the popular chocolate brand, has unveiled a new eco-friendly packaging solution for its mini chocolates. The new packaging, a paper stand-up pouch, replaces the previous plastic-wrapped tray, marking a significant step towards the company's goal of transitioning all packaging to a paper-based solution by 2025.

The new packaging has been developed in collaboration with Koehler Paper Group, a renowned paper manufacturer. The individual minis are still packaged in polypropylene film, which is fully recyclable and certified according to Cradle to Cradle (Material Health Certificate, Bronze Standard). The paper used for the mini pouch is Koehler NexPlus Seal Pure 65g/m², a barrier-coated paper with various functionalities, made from renewable resources and 100% recyclable in the paper recycling loop.

According to the company, the life cycle analysis of flexible packaging papers from Koehler shows significant CO2 savings compared to conventional papers with PE coatings or plastic duplex products. The inner coating of the Ritter Sport mini paper pouch allows for mechanical sealing using heat.

Initial tests with paper-based primary packaging for Ritter Sport minis have shown promising results. Katja Binder, Head of Packaging Development at Ritter Sport, stated that the new packaging will save 15 tons of plastic film per year compared to the previous packaging. The paper for the mini pouch was developed in collaboration with Koehler Paper Group and is FSC-certified.

Eckhard Kallies, Head of Flexible Packaging Papers at Koehler, expressed that barrier papers are the future, as paper is increasingly taking on functionalities that plastic could previously only offer, and it does so with a much more sustainable life cycle.

The sustainability report, titled "Doing the Right Thing," reflects the company's own sense of responsibility. The report documents strategies, processes, and measures in the context of sustainability management. Ritter Sport GmbH & Co. KG is currently cooperating with the company "Onpack GmbH" to develop a more sustainable packaging solution for Ritter Sport Mini, and the new packaging is called "Reearth."

The new packaging for Ritter Sport minis is entirely made of paper for its secondary packaging, marking the first product to do so. This move is part of Ritter Sport's efforts to reduce its environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The Ritter Sport Sustainability Report 2020 focuses on the topic of packaging, highlighting the company's commitment to reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices. The report has been published biennially since 2014.

As Ritter Sport continues to innovate and improve its packaging solutions, it is clear that the company is dedicated to making a positive impact on the environment. The introduction of the new packaging for Ritter Sport minis is a significant step towards achieving the company's goal of transitioning all packaging to a paper-based solution by 2025.
