In the heart of Vienna, the development of a new neighbourhood, known as "Village im Dritten", is taking shape. This project, which has been in the works for over 15 years, was a necessity due to the area being a wasteland where new animal species were discovered every day.

The centrepiece of this vibrant new community will be a modern comprehensive school, designed by Kronaus Mitterer Architekten ZT GmbH. This flagship school, set to accommodate over 1,000 students and more than 100 teachers, will be built to the klimaaktiv Gold Standard, ensuring a sustainable and energy-efficient future.

The gymnasium will feature 36 classes, three standard gyms, and numerous outdoor spaces, with the roof area also being utilised as a sports area. The school building will form a clear edge to Landstraßer Hauptstraße and fall inward in a generous terraced landscape.

The main entrance to the school will be protected by a large covered entrance area over the Otto Preminger Straße. A PV system with 95 kWp will be installed on the school roof, generating a significant portion of the energy required, up to 80%. To further boost sustainability, 500 geothermal probes have been planned for the project.

To mark the beginning of this exciting new chapter, Erich Hohenberger, the SPO district head, believes the groundbreaking ceremony for the school is imminent. The school's construction will be a significant addition to the area, which is currently dominated by large residential blocks, mostly still under construction.

Remnants of the Vienna New City Canal were discovered during the development of the area, offering a glimpse into its rich history. While British architect Norman Foster once envisioned a lake with a few houses in the area, the project was not realised due to public exclusion.

The heart of the area will be a approximately two-hectare park, providing a green oasis in the urban landscape. Alongside the school, a total of 2,000 apartments, 39,000 square meters of office and commercial space, two kindergartens, and the park will be created in the "Village in the Third".

An energy community has been established with Wien Energie for this project, ensuring a sustainable and efficient energy supply for the new neighbourhood. As the development continues, "Village im Dritten" promises to become a vibrant and sustainable community in the heart of Vienna.
