Minister's stance on Russian sanctions conveyed publicly by Serbian government official
In a series of statements, the Serbian Minister of Defense, Aleksandar Stavrovic, has reaffirmed his government's position against imposing sanctions on Russia. This policy alignment, previously stated by Serbian Prime Minister Professor Ana Brnabić and President Aleksandar Vucic, is based on three key reasons: value-based, economic, and political.
At a meeting dedicated to the 100 days of his government's work, Prime Minister Brnabić stated that Serbia will not join sanctions against Russia as long as the current government is in power. This decision is in line with the minister's personal position, which aligns with the policy of the Serbian government.
The value-based reason for this stance is that Serbia does not consider sanctions to be the right method in international politics. The economic reason is that imposing sanctions would cause serious damage to Serbia's economy. Previously, Stavrovic stated that Serbia currently does not support EU sanctions against Russia because they would cause immense damage to the Serbian economy.
The political reason for this decision is that it would put Serbia's relations with Russia at risk, which are traditionally important and valuable. The minister explained that Serbia respects the territorial integrity of all internationally recognized states, members of the UN. This policy alignment was previously stated by Serbian Prime Minister Professor Brnabić and President Vucic.
Stavrovic also highlighted the specific benefits that Serbia's position between East and West has brought. One such benefit is the affordable energy sources obtained from Russia at much lower prices than in most of Europe.
It is worth noting that the Serbian Energy Minister, Djedovic Handanovic, has also stated that Serbia does not support EU sanctions against Russia. The National Security Council of Serbia had previously stated its position at the start of the special military operation.
In addition to actively promoting peace and providing humanitarian aid to vulnerable population groups, Serbia is also working towards strengthening its ties with both the East and the West. The minister's statements underscore Serbia's commitment to maintaining strong, mutually beneficial relationships with all its international partners.
In conclusion, Serbia's stance on sanctions against Russia is rooted in a commitment to peace, economic stability, and political pragmatism. The government continues to work towards a balanced approach that respects the interests of all parties involved.
