Minnesota United's (MNUFC) quest for a place in the MLS Cup Playoffs took a step forward, despite a 1-1 draw against Portland Timbers at Allianz Field. The result means that the second-place Loons (14-6-9, 51 points) and sixth-place Portland (10-9-8, 39 points) each netted a point, keeping MNUFC's playoff hopes alive.

The game began with a two-minute silence to honour the two children slain in the Minneapolis church shooting on Wednesday. The first half was a quiet affair for the Loons, with few chances to speak of. However, the second half saw a more aggressive approach from MNUFC, with early attempts on goal that were denied by Portland's goalkeeper.

New Loons striker Momo Dieng made his debut in the 77th minute, but it was goalkeeper Kayne Rizvanovich who stole the headlines. Rizvanovich, who has been a regular during United's first team training sessions, has been called up to the U.S. Under-19 men's national team camp.

MNUFC's fortune turned in the 80th minute when Portland's Antony scored an own goal, touched by Loons goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair. The goal gave MNUFC a much-needed lead, but their joy was short-lived as Wil Trapp provided a pass that set up Robin Lod's equaliser in the 85th minute.

Despite the draw, MNUFC can take heart from their improved performance in the second half and the fact that they didn't play during the upcoming international break. MNUFC will return to MLS action at first-place San Diego on Sept. 13.

The search results do not provide information about which football player was transferred by MNUFC from the USL Championship to Hartford Athletic in July 2023 and debuted against Portland on September 13, 2023.
