In the coming months, significant changes are set to affect the Welsh seafood industry, with the aim of minimizing any disruption to commercial operations and trade. The Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (BLV) has indicated updates to export health certificates in 2025, which will also impact fish export services.

Starting from July 2025, all details for the first mode of transport must be entered, including the start date of the fishing trip. Exporters are also required to provide the landing data and specify the gear type used during the fishing trip.

The Fish Export Service (FES) will require new information on catch certificates due to the EU's IUU fishing regulations. The catch certificate must now include the exclusive economic zone where the catch occurred, as well as whether there is interest from a regional fisheries management organization (RFMO). Failure to comply with these new requirements may prevent the sale of produce.

These changes will affect not only fishers who export directly but also those involved in the sales of Welsh seafood. The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is working to support fishers, merchants, and exporters with these changes, ensuring a smooth transition for all parties involved.

The MMO updates on export health certificates in 2025 also indicate that the catch certificate must include the area of catch, which will be introduced in September 2025. Similarly, changes regarding gear type will also be introduced in September.

For those seeking more detailed information about these changes, the EU IUU Regulation 2026 Changes can be found on gov.uk. The MMO encourages everyone involved in the Welsh seafood sales to familiarise themselves with these changes to ensure a seamless transition and continued success in the industry.
