Moldova introduces digital nomad visa program

Moldova, a hidden gem in Eastern Europe, is making waves in the digital nomad community with the introduction of its new digital nomad visa programme. The initiative, launched by the Moldovan government in collaboration with the Moldovan Investment Agency, aims to attract remote workers seeking alternatives to higher-cost destinations in Western Europe.

The programme offers several key selling points, including a low cost of living, developing co-working infrastructure in the capital Chisinau, and reliable internet connectivity. Moldova's positioning as a "hidden gem" reflects efforts to attract visitors beyond traditional tourist markets.

To apply for the digital nomad visa, applicants must provide a valid passport with at least six months validity, four recent passport photographs, employment contracts confirming remote work arrangements, and proof of accommodation such as lease agreements. Additionally, applicants must provide proof of one year of medical insurance, a clean criminal record certificate, and evidence of sufficient income, with requirements ranging from US$1,500 to US$2,000 monthly.

The application process can be done online or in person, and will be handled by the Bureau of Migration and Asylum (BMA). Upon approval, visa holders must register locally with migration police, with some cases resulting in local identity cards for extended stays.

Successful applicants receive temporary work and residence permits with the possibility of renewal. The visa programme allows remote workers to live in Moldova for up to two years. Extensions can be granted through local registration processes, with the possibility of extensions for up to five years.

Moldova joins neighbouring countries Romania, Hungary, Montenegro, and Slovenia in offering digital nomad programmes, reflecting broader regional competition to attract remote workers. The digital nomad programme in Moldova does not repeat earlier stated income requirements or application process details, but it allows extensions through local registration processes.

Processing fees for the application range between €40 and €80. The programme is effective from September 20, 2025. This new initiative is set to boost Moldova's economy and further establish the country as a desirable destination for digital nomads.
