In a significant move, the City of Gütersloh has become the sole shareholder of the Stadtwerke Gütersloh group, following the acquisition of the remaining shares from Stadtwerke Bielefeld. This development was facilitated by the Gütersloher Beteiligungsgesellschaft (GBG), a 100% subsidiary of the City of Gütersloh.

The repurchase of shares, which took place on August 5, 2025, was a strategic decision aimed at aligning public utilities with local needs and strengthening them for the future. Mayor Matthias Trepper, who is also the chairman of the supervisory board of Stadtwerke Gütersloh, was involved in the negotiations.

The GBG's acquisition of the 49.9% stake held by Stadtwerke Bielefeld now means that the City of Gütersloh holds 100% of the shares in the Stadtwerke Gütersloh group. As the sole shareholder, the City of Gütersloh now bears full responsibility for the group.

With this new ownership structure, the city will be able to guide the Stadtwerke exclusively from Gütersloh. Important and strategic decisions for the group will now be made exclusively in Gütersloh, ensuring a more streamlined and localised approach to decision-making.

Mayor Trepper expressed his pleasure with the Stadtwerke now being fully and exclusively a subsidiary of the City of Gütersloh. He is looking forward to accompanying and shaping the path of the Stadtwerke under the new ownership structure. Dietmar Spohn, the managing director of Stadtwerke Gütersloh, was also part of the negotiations.

Prior to this, the City of Gütersloh had already transferred 50.1% of its shares to the GBG in a previous step. The purchase price for the shares was paid to the Bielefeld city works.

This development marks a significant milestone in the history of Stadtwerke Gütersloh, as it now operates under 100% municipal ownership. The city of Gütersloh took 100% ownership of Stadtwerke Gütersloh on August 5, 2025, before the company was acquired through sale by GBG. This change is expected to bring about a more localised and community-focused approach to the management of public utilities in Gütersloh.
