Month has passed with no sign of Elon Musk's America Party, leaving supporters in suspense
In a surprising turn of events, tech mogul Elon Musk announced the formation of a new political party called the "America Party" on July 5, 2025. The announcement came in response to Donald Trump getting the "Big Beautiful Bill" passed, and Musk took to his social media platform to ask people if it was time to create a new political party that represents the 80% in the middle.
The America Party aims to create a political movement representing the moderate majority and opposing the established two-party system in the US. Musk's dedication to projects he's passionate about is well-known, and he has been known to go "founder mode" and sleep in his office. However, it is unclear if the America Party will be one of Musk's passions that he dedicates significant resources and time to.
According to a recent poll by YouGov, 46% of Americans think a third party is necessary in the two-party system. Yet, recent polling suggests that although many Americans are open to the idea of a third political party, many are sceptical of one that has been created by Musk. Only 11% of Americans would consider signing up for a Musk-founded party, according to another poll.
Starting a political party involves filing paperwork with the Federal Election Commission and gathering signatures to get on the ballot across states. Candidates need to be found for House and Senate seats in order to establish a political party. Political figures like Andrew Yang and Libertarian Party chair Steven Nekhaila had suggested cooperation, but Musk has since put the party plans on indefinite hold to focus on his businesses and maintain relations with political allies such as Vice President JD Vance.
Mark Cuban, the head of the Democratic Party, stated that Musk's plans for a new party should be taken seriously. Despite the initial enthusiasm, Musk has not mentioned the America Party for weeks, leaving many wondering about the future of this new political movement.
