Moscow's top aide declares persisting military offensive
In the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has lasted more than three and a half years, accusations and negotiations have dominated recent developments.
Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov has announced a continuation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with new objectives for an autumn offensive. According to Gerasimov, constant attacks are currently taking place along the entire front line of the invasion. He also stated that Russian forces currently control around 99.7% of the Ukrainian territory of Luhansk, 79% in the Ukrainian territory of Donetsk, 76% in the areas of Kherson, and 74% in the areas of Zaporizhzhia.
These figures regarding the control of Ukrainian territories by Russian forces are not independently verifiable. However, the cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, currently held by Ukraine, are considered important strongholds of defense.
The Russian delegate, Kirill Dmitriev, accused Europeans of trying to prolong the Ukraine conflict by making unfulfillable demands. He suggested that the EU should stop sabotaging the peace process. The Russian representative who noted that Europeans are trying to prolong the Ukraine conflict with feasible demands was the Russian chief negotiator Vladimir Medinski. He mentioned this in the context of peace talks, emphasizing Russia's stance on the negotiations and the difficulties in reaching a ceasefire agreement.
Russia has demanded that Ukrainian forces withdraw completely from the Donetsk region and hand over the region to the Russian army to achieve a ceasefire. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected Russia's demand.
Moscow is said to have rejected representatives from NATO countries in negotiations. This has led to criticism from Europeans, who accuse Russia of employing a delaying tactic by offering negotiations and setting new deadlines.
The city of Kyiv has made the accusation against Russia that it wants to send troops to Ukraine to secure a possible future peace, a claim that Moscow categorically rejects.
Gerasimov's statements contradict the demands of US President Donald Trump to quickly end the war in Ukraine. Dmitriev stated that the US is beginning to understand this. He also suggested that the EU should stop sabotaging the peace process.
Amidst these ongoing tensions, the peace talks continue, with both sides seeking a resolution to the conflict. The future of Ukraine hangs in the balance as the world watches and waits.
